Appreciated this letter received this morning from Barbara Serena:
this morning i woke up with an urge to watch PHANTOM LOVE again. and, again, i am BLOWN AWAY by the way nina was able to represent the world of continuous horror and loss that trauma creates, and how she did it from a female perspective, without losing any sensuality. i do not know how people who have not experienced severe violence see this work. i mean, life is absurd and everyone is traumatized to some degree, but, well, there are degrees…all i can say, i have rarely, if ever, felt so represented. i have been told a million times i should write a book, finish my scripts, blah blah blah, and i never feel like what i have to say could be of interest to anyone (hence i write music), and watching nina’s work again i am envious (in a good way:-)) of her ability to speak, of her awareness that her voice IS to be heard. this is SERIOUS work. beautiful, painful. GREAT work.
thank you barbara!!!! x

“The beginning of love is the will to let those we love be perfectly themselves, the resolution not to twist them to fit our own image. If in loving them we do not love what they are, but only their potential likeness to ourselves, then we do not love them: we only love the reflection of ourselves we find in them.”

“Extraordinary! A masterpiece. Menkes is the greatest filmmaker of our time, blending the ancient and the most modern mythologies. No other filmmaker approaches the transcendent visual alchemy that Menkes achieves. Study all her films and find a new vision of cinematic poetry. Her work is among the most precious of the hidden artistic treasures of our time.”
